Diving deep into data to save water waste
We work closely with our partners to invest in technologies to reduce our daily water usage.
By closely monitoring data and addressing inefficiencies, we can reduce our water use and as a result, reduce our impact on the environment. Here’s what we’ve done at British Sugar’s factory in Newark, UK.
So, how do we do it?
LOCAL CHAMPIONS at our Newark plant are constantly looking to reduce our water usage; and one area of particular focus is maintaining our infrastructure.
At the plant, good water management practices include looking after the water pipes, continuing to uphold high standards of maintenance, and stopping leaks to make sure we don’t lose any water.
When we do spring a leak, we are in the lucky position that our teams are constantly reviewing our consumption and extraction data so we can find opportunities to save water in a timely way.
In 2021, the data revealed a discrepancy. We identified that we had leak and it needed fixing. Our teams partnered with the water provider Water Plus to replace part of Newark town’s main water pipe which was leaking on our site. By taking the quick action to repair the pipes, we will save approximately 72 cubic meters (m3) per day, or 26,280 cubic metres (m3) per year.
This represents an almost 14% reduction in the ‘towns’ water that we bring to our site. The work undertaken by the team demonstrates the importance of this project in reducing water usage.
