AB Sugar holds a 51% stake in Illovo Sugar Limited, the largest cane sugar producer in Africa and one of the world’s lowest cost producers.
The group has extensive agricultural and manufacturing operations in six African countries, namely, South Africa, Malawi, Zambia, Swaziland, Tanzania and Mozambique. Illovo produces raw and refined sugar for local, regional, European and world markets from sugar cane supplied by its own agricultural operations and independent growers who supply cane to Illovo’s factories. High-value products manufactured downstream of the sugar production process are sold internationally into niche markets. Installed electricity generating capacity, fuelled by renewable resources, provides around 91% of the group’s energy requirements.
Excellent climatic and soil conditions in the group’s countries of operation, accompanied by irrigation from secure water sources, are ideal for the cultivation of high-yielding and good quality sugar cane. Just under 6.1 million tonnes of cane were produced on Illovo estates in the 2013/14 season and, combined with cane supplied by independent growers, total sugar production in the same period amounted to around 1.8 million tonnes. Major capacity expansions aimed at increasing annual cane and sugar output have already been completed in Zambia and Swaziland, with further expansions underway in other countries of operation.
